“Effective microorganisms (EM) was first developed by Professor Teruo Higa, University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan. Since 1982, EM has been applied by planters, livestock and fish/prawn farmers to improve the biodiversity of soil, overall health of livestock (Cattle, Poultry, Goats) and crustacean (fish, prawn), as well as the increase in yields due to rich soil nutrients , reduction in pests and diseases.”

“The agriculture, aquaculture and livestock waste can be recycled into organic fertilizers, which can be applied back into the fields, positively affecting the Green Union. EM is also an effective tool for odour control, be it for commercial livestock, domestic pets or town wastes.”

“EM has been introduced in more than 150 countries, including application by Ministry of Health of Kenya, Vietnamese Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, Asia Pacific Natural Agriculture Network (Thailand), EARTH University (Costa Rica), Jeonju University (South Korea), Meio University (Japan), United Networks For Earth Environment (U-Net of Japan), EM Bokashi Network (Japan), and Environment Learning Network (EL-Net of Japan).

Within Malaysia, states which are using EM include Sabah (SM La Salle, Kota Kinabalu), Johor Bahru (Johor Bahru Municipality), Penang (Penang Government Institute for Environmental management), Selangor (Petaling Jaya City Council, CEPP-UTM), Malacca, Pahang and Perlis.
